Public official in neighboring community accused of DUI

Drunk driving is among the most common crimes charged in Pennsylvania, or anywhere else in the country. These charges can affect people from all walks of life, and, for many people, an arrest on suspicion of drunk driving represents the first time they have had first-hand experience of the criminal justice system.

Recently, a public official in a Pennsylvania town was arrested on suspicion of DUI. A zoning officer for Honesdale, the man was on duty at the time of the arrest and had called the police to meet him. Police alleged that the zoning officer appeared under the influence of a controlled substance. His vehicle was parked where he met the police officer and he admitted to driving there. The zoning officer submitted to a drug test and charges against him are pending the results of the blood test. The zoning officer noted he will contest the charges.

According to the zoning officer, he had been working on a building with a bad mold problem that had been condemned. As a result, he was suffering from a chest infection. The chest infection resulted in strain to his larynx and made talking difficult which sometimes made it sound as though his words were slurred but he was not under the influence.

A DUI arrest, as well as DUI charges, can have a significant impact on the personal and professional lives of accused individuals. Because of the serious penalties and consequences associated with DUI allegations, it is important for individuals facing DUI charges to be familiar with their rights. Procedural rights are in place to protect individuals accused of crimes. When police fail to follow proper procedures, or violate an accused party's rights, criminal charges that result from such actions may be challenged.

When an individual is facing DUI charges, they may be faced with potential jail time, license suspension and numerous personal and professional consequences. Because of the significant impact DUI charges can have on an accused individual's life, it is important for individuals accused of any type of crime to be familiar with their criminal defense rights and know how to use them effectively.
