Murder may involve love triangle

Two men vying for the same woman may have set the stage for a grisly murder in central Pennsylvania. While details about the crime are sketchy at the moment, police have released enough information about the murder to indicate that the both the murderer and his alleged victim were interested in the same woman.

The victim had been missing for over a week when his decomposing body was discovered in Penn Forest in Carbon County. A few days after discovery of the body, police arrested a man living in Hazelton and charged him with criminal homicide. The body was found close to the suspect's boyhood home, and the victim's car was found parked in front of the home occupied by the accused. Police believe that the alleged murderer shot the victim in the former's garage and then transported the body to the spot where it was discovered. According to a statement of the Luzerne County District attorney, the accused planned the crime, cleaned the scene, disposed of evidence and moved the body.

Police have not disclosed either the circumstances of the homicide or any motive, but circumstantial evidences points strongly to romantic jealousy. The accused man was living with the woman who was married to the victim. The couple was in the process of obtaining a divorce, but the dissolution proceeding had not reached its conclusion when the homicide occurred. At his arraignment, the defendant denied having anything to do with the crime, but he is being held without bail.

Being charged with criminal homicide is not the same as a conviction for that crime. The defendant in this case is constitutionally entitled to a presumption that he is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Nevertheless, anyone facing murder charges or accused of any other serious crime may wish to consult an experienced criminal defense attorney. A knowledgeable lawyer can provide a helpful overview of the facts of the case, an enumeration of possible defenses and an estimate of the likelihood of obtaining either a favorable plea agreement or an outright acquittal.
