What are penalties for crimes related to meth in Pennsylvania?

Drug charges are treated very seriously in Pennsylvania. Those who are confronted with these charges need to have a grasp on the different levels of penalties that are relevant in their case. These penalties often depend on the types of drugs that are involved.

Drugs that are growing in use and seriousness are methamphetamines. For those who are arrested on drug charges linked to methamphetamines and its derivatives can face certain sentencing guidelines under state law. These can be serious and cause long-term legal and personal problems that can negatively affect a person's life.

If the amount of the compound or mixture is a minimum of five grams, and not more than 10 grams, the amount the convicted person is fined and the accompanying jail sentence must be enough to exhaust assets used and the proceeds from the illegal acts. That will mean three years in jail and a fine of $15,000 or more, depending on the circumstances. In the event that the defendant was convicted of a another offense linked to the trafficking of drugs, there will be at least five years in prison and a fine of at least $30,000.

If the weight of the compound or mixture is 10 grams or more but less than 100 grams, there will be four years imprisonment and a fine of at least $25,000. For those who have been charged and convicted of another drug offense for the trafficking of drugs, there will be seven years in jail and a fine of at least $50,000.

If the weight is at least 100 grams, there will be a prison sentence of five years and a fine of at least $50,000. For a person who is also charged and convicted with trafficking of drugs, there will be eight years in jail and at least $50,000 in fines.

It is imperative that those who are charged with crimes related to meth understand that the amount of the fine will fluctuate depending on how much is deemed necessary to exhaust the proceeds from the endeavor. Therefore, there is no set amount. Those who are dealing with drug charge allegations involving methamphetamines and these potential penalties, must make certain that they lodge a strong defense to avoid the harshest penalties. Speaking to a legal professional and formulating a sound criminal defense is the main priority for a person who has been arrested on meth charges.
