Informant leads to heroin arrest in Carbondale

Persons involved in heroin trafficking in Lackawanna County often travel to New Jersey to obtain drugs that are then sold in eastern Pennsylvania. Occasionally, friends ride along on the trip, and sometimes these friends turn out to be police informants. In a recent case, police obtained information from an informant about a drug buying trip to New Jersey that led to the arrest of a Carbondale man on assorted drug charges.

According to the affidavit of probable cause that the police submitted to obtain an arrest warrant, an informant met with the Lackawanna County Drug Task Force in September to discuss heroin trafficking in Carbondale. The informant revealed that he routinely rode to New Jersey with a man that supplied him with heroin. The trips were used to purchase heroin that the man resold in Carbondale. In late October, the informant purchased a single packet of a substance labeled "Shadow" from the suspect. The substance was analyzed by the police and was identified as heroin.

In early November, police officials from Carbondale and Mayfield, accompanied by parole officers, arrested the suspected drug dealer. The man admitted to having given a brick of heroin to his girlfriend. When the girlfriend was questioned, she turned over 91 packets of heroin labeled as "Shadow." The man, who was on parole, was charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute, unlawful delivery of heroin and possession of heroin. He is being detained on bail of $75,000.

Like so many cases reported by media, the facts of this case seem overwhelming, but the suspect - like every criminal defendant - is entitled to be presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Anyone who is facing drug charges or allegations of other serious crimes can benefit from consulting an experienced criminal defense attorney. Such a consultation can provide a helpful analysis of the facts of the case and applicable law, an enumeration of potential defenses and an estimate of the likelihood of obtaining a favorable plea agreement or an outright acquittal.
