Five years of rape and assault may be ended by recent arrest

| Apr 20, 2016 | Sex Crimes

A young woman from Dunmore has accused a man with a criminal record of repeatedly raping her during a five-year period, from when she was 8 years old to age 13. The man was arrested and locked in the Lackawanna County Prison, with bail set at $150,000.

The alleged rapes came to light when the young woman told her ex-boyfriend that the accused had raped her. The ex-boyfriend confronted the alleged rapist, who then called the girl’s mother to ask why the girl made the accusations. The mother contacted police the next day and related the accusations. The girl was interviewed at the Children’s Advocacy Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania concerning her allegations. She said that the defendant raped her “over and over.”

The defendant told police that he had been physically abusive to the girl, but he denied raping her. The man is facing charges of rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, indecent assault of a person less than 13 years of age, corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of a child. Police also revealed that the defendant has a prior criminal record, including aggravated assault and theft.

The charges in this case are very serious, and the defendant could face a number of years in prison if he were to be convicted. Nevertheless, he is entitled to be presumed innocent unless and until he is proved guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Anyone facing such charges may wish to consult an experienced criminal defense attorney. Such a consultation can provide an independent review of the case, an enumeration of possible defense strategies and an estimate of the likelihood of obtaining a favorable plea bargain or an outright acquittal.
