Drug suspect urinates on pants in attempt to dissolve heroin

On Behalf of | Sep 22, 2016 | Criminal Defense

Individuals who are facing arrest on drug charges often attempt to discard or destroy the drugs to prevent their use as evidence. In a recent and otherwise routine drug arrest in Scranton, the accused resorted to a novel means to avoid criminal charges: he urinated on himself.

The accused was under investigation for dealing in heroin and cocaine. To verify their suspicions, Lackawanna County detectives arranged a controlled drug buy in which they allegedly purchased 10 bags of heroin from the accused. Once the transaction had been consummated, the detectives attempted to arrest the suspect.

The accused at first resisted the officers, and they used a stun gun to subdue him. The accused was handcuffed and searched, and the detectives reportedly found several thousand dollars and a plastic sandwich bag holding five bags of heroin and four bags of cocaine in his pants pocket. As the detectives began their search, the suspect began urinating on himself, apparently hoping that the urine would dissolve the heroin. His attempt failed, and he is currently in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail. A field test of the drugs gave a positive result for narcotics, and the materials were sent to a state police crime laboratory for further testing.

Persons facing criminal charges for possession or dealing in controlled substances may be tempted to resort to extreme measures to destroy evidence, but as this case demonstrates, such efforts may not succeed. A better choice is to contact an experienced criminal defense attorney. A knowledgeable lawyer can evaluate the facts of the case, suggest possible defenses and offer an estimate of the chances of obtaining a favorable plea bargain or outright acquittal.
