Presence of child adds to drug charges against Scranton couple

Lackawanna County detectives recently used a controlled drug purchase to obtain access to a Scranton apartment. The police found the drugs they believed were in the apartment, but they also found something unexpected - a two-year-old child.

The county detectives were investigating alleged drug sales originating in the apartment building on River Street. After making a controlled purchase from a person who resided in the building, the detectives obtained a search warrant. According to the complaint, the police arrested a man and a woman and found 11 bags of crack and 37 clonazepam pills. Clonazepam is more commonly known as Klonopin. The child, the grandson of the female suspect, was sleeping on the living room floor. The man was free on bail after being arrested in June and charged with selling drugs in Scranton.

The defendants were charged with felony and misdemeanor drug charges and charges of endangering the welfare of a child. The woman apparently has an 11-year-old child or grandchild who was not in the apartment when the arrests were made. Both children were later placed in custody with the County Office of Youth and Family Services. The man and woman are being held in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of bail. Preliminary hearings for the pair are set for September 8, 2016.

The two suspects in this case are entitled to be presumed innocent of all charges unless and until they are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Nevertheless, they are facing very serious criminal charges. Anyone who faces similar charges may wish to retain an experienced criminal defense attorney. A knowledgeable lawyer can provide an evaluation of the case, suggest potential defense strategies and offer an estimate of the likelihood of negotiating a favorable plea agreement or obtaining an outright acquittal.
