Mother and son charged with sex crimes

On Behalf of | Jul 26, 2018 | Sex Crimes

Women are charged with sex crimes far less frequently than men. Not surprisingly, when a woman is alleged to have committed such crimes, the circumstances can be highly unusual. Two recent arrests in Lackawanna County go a long way to proving the point.

Police announced that they arrested a 58-year-old woman and her 28-year-old son on a number of charges concerning sexual abuse of young girls. The alleged crimes first came to light when a seven-year-old girl, who is one of the alleged victims, told a social worker about the alleged sex crimes while she was being treated in the emergency room at a Scranton hospital. The worker immediately contacted the ChildLine abuse hotline, and a criminal investigation was launched shortly thereafter.

According to detectives, the male instigated sexual contact with two young girls beginning in June of 2017 and continuing through July 2018. He has been arrested and charged with aggravated indecent assault of a child and corruption of minors. His mother was arrested and charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of minor children. Officers believe that the woman knew of her son’s actions with the girls and did nothing to interfere. Investigators also said they fear that other victims may exist. The investigation has so far determined that the incidents of abuse happened at locations in both Archibald and Dunmore.

Both defendants in this case are facing serious criminal charges. If convicted, they could face both a lengthy period of incarceration and large fines. Anyone who faces similar charges may wish to consult an experienced criminal defense attorney for an evaluation of the evidence and potential defenses. A defense attorney can also assist with plea negotiations and handle other pre-trial matters.
