Do states with stricter gun laws have lower gun-related deaths?

On Behalf of | Jul 19, 2021 | Violent Crimes

Gun control is one of the most divisive topics in the United States of America. Many people seem to have strong opinions either for or against gun control. When such strong opinions and emotions are attached to a subject, it can be difficult to be impartial.

According to proponents of gun control, common sense calls for tougher laws to stop gun violence. Gun rights advocates, however, argue that gun laws don’t stop someone intent on committing violent crimes with firearms.

Current research on correlations between gun deaths and the number of laws

There is evidence that seems to suggest that stricter gun regulations have had a significant decrease in the number of firearm deaths.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), in 2019 there were 11.7 firearm deaths per 100,000. Every state has different regulations throughout the nation regarding gun control. Pennsylvania has moderately stricter gun laws than other states with numerous firearm-related laws on the books.

Research demonstrates that states with tougher gun laws have lower gun-related death rates. However, it is still inconclusive if there is a direct correlation of cause and effect, but the data suggests that there is.

What can Pennsylvanians do if interested in the subject?

Gun control is a controversial topic throughout the nation. Pennsylvania is no exception. If wondering about state and federal laws regarding firearms, it is important to be self-educated on the subject. A firearm is a powerful tool in the right hands. In the wrong hands, guns can be destructive and dangerous.

Accidents with weapons can happen to anybody. If you’re facing weapons or violent crime charges, understanding more about the laws surrounding your case can make it easier to participate in your own defense. It may be a good idea to consult with an advocate in Pennsylvania that is experienced and knowledgeable in this complicated area of the law.
