Carbondale men facing possession of child pornography charges

The Internet is a great tool for business and social purposes alike. Today, many people use the Internet to reconnect with old friends, maintain a relationship with current friends as well as to meet new people. Unfortunately, because so much information is being transmitted online, your Internet activity may be misinterpreted.

Three men might be experiencing such a misinterpretation. Two Carbondale men and another Pennsylvania man were recently arrested for downloading, sharing and distributing Internet child pornography. After searching one of the Carbondale man's computer, police allegedly found 20 child pornography videos.

The suspect was arrested and charged with various charges, including ten counts of possession of child pornography, one count for the distribution of child pornography and one count of criminal use of a communication facility. The other male suspects involved are facing similar criminal charges. Police used social media websites such as Facebook while investigating the men. This information was used to support the warrants established for their arrests.

Federal law and Pennsylvania law make it a crime to produce, possess, distribute or sell pornographic materials involving children under the age of 18. In Pennsylvania, merely viewing or possessing Internet child pornography is a felony.

The severity of the sentence is determined by codified guidelines and will depend on several factors such as the age of the child supposedly involved in the pornography. Also, the number of images purportedly possessed by the accused and the nature of the acts in the images will play a factor in the resulting penalties.

Charges for the of possession of child pornography in Pennsylvania are serious and can cause damage to reputation in both the accused's personal and professional life. A strong criminal defense may assist in damage control, preventing the imposition of the most serious charges or even exonerating the accused.
